Thank God there was some chemistry between the two leads, otherwise depending on this movie’s screenplay for genuine entertainment would have been a waste of time. Amusing in most cases, but it’s been done many many times before, but surprisingly this is probably one of the better tellings of a cliched storyline.

Movie: Invictus

Clint Eastwood while highly respected is a bag of mixed nuts. When he’s good, he’s VERY good (case in point: Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino), but then he manages to surprise you with some really underwhelming films (Flags of our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima). It just makes me wonder. I thought Invictus had its strong moments, but from Eastwood I expected something MORE. Not only is it supposed to be a semi-biography of Nelson Mandela, but its void of the Eastwood trademarks. I liked it; it had its moments, but come on, Eastwood is supposed to blow us away!

Movie: A Single Man

Colin Firth probably gives his strongest performance to date here (and that’s saying a lot), but overall the film is lacking a great deal. While it is indeed watchable and certainly enjoyable, it isn’t gonna be a memorable film. A decent enough film to give a reserved recommendation.

Movie: The Lovely Bones

The Lovely Bones is a strong motion picture with a great supporting performance by Stanley Tucci. Unfortunately, it was my own anticipated movie of 2009 and it didn’t live up to my expectations. Not only did it not live up to that, but I thought it had way too many flaws that required. Peter Jackson is a solid director, but he make something less than what we’ve come to expect from him. Mind you, this movie is a good one and should be seen, but I expected a whole lot more.

Movie: Up In The Air

Director Jason Reitman strikes again. Up In The Air is a lovely, almost flawless motion picture that boasts of a strong and witty screenplay and three amazingly strong performances (Clooney, Kendrick and Farmiga). This is one of those movies that will undoubtedly become a classic. Possibly the best movie of 2009.

Movie: Transylmania

Very little can be expected from this movie, and yet somehow it managed to disappoint. The only reason I’m not giving it a full-blown hatred rating is because there are two incredibly genius jokes in here that can rival any classic comedy, but everything else is pure caca.

Movie: Everybody’s Fine

It’s nice to see Robert DeNiro playing a human being again, not a larger than life character. He nails it, but it’s an otherwise tepid and only slightly amusing movie, which will quickly be forgotten before the end of the year. Still a decent motion picture.

Movie: Brothers

My memory of Brothers is a bit shaken. I’d seen it since October. But one thing has never left me: it’s an excellent and powerful motion picture, with a bravura performance by Tobey Maguire, one of my favorite male performances of the year.

This is definitely one move to see this Oscar season. It has excellent direction, performances and a strong and well-constructed storyline and screenplay. Definitely see this one.
